I put petrol in my diesel — what do I do?

Don't start the engine! Don't even turn the ignition on. Call for a wrong fuel drain immediately. If caught before starting, it's a straightforward drain and flush with no engine damage.

What if I already started the engine?

Turn it off immediately and don't try to restart. The fuel system will need a more thorough flush, and the injectors may need checking — but it's usually still fixable roadside.

Can you charge my electric car at the roadside?

Some providers carry mobile EV chargers that can give enough charge to reach the nearest charge point. Others will flatbed your vehicle to the nearest charger or your home.

How long does a wrong fuel drain take?

Typically 30–60 minutes roadside. The tank is drained, flushed, and refilled with the correct fuel. You'll usually be driving away within the hour.

Is wrong fuel covered by insurance?

Standard car insurance usually doesn't cover misfuelling. Some breakdown policies do — check your terms. Either way, prompt draining is far cheaper than engine repair.

I've run out of fuel on the motorway — what do I do?

Move into the left lane and stop in an emergency area, a lay-by or on the hard shoulder, hazard lights on. If it is safe, get out on the side away from traffic and wait behind the barrier. Use the free emergency phone or call National Highways on 0300 123 5000, then arrange fuel delivery or recovery.
